Utilizing data from a large randomized controlled trial (RCT), the research concludes that calcium supplements do not increase dementia risk in older women. This finding is significant for both patients and clinicians, supporting the continued use of calcium for bone health without added cognitive risk.

The Importance of Calcium in Bone Health

Calcium plays a vital role in maintaining bone strength, a fact well-recognized in the medical community. It is particularly crucial for postmenopausal women, who are at higher risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis leads to weakened bones and an increased risk of fractures, making calcium intake a priority for this demographic. The body uses calcium for various physiological functions, including muscle contraction and nerve transmission. When dietary calcium is insufficient, the body extracts it from bones, leading to decreased bone density.

For years, calcium supplements have been recommended to prevent bone density loss. Despite their widespread use, there have been concerns about potential adverse effects. Some earlier studies suggested these supplements might contribute to vascular damage or calcium accumulation in the brain, both of which are linked to dementia. This has caused anxiety among those who rely on calcium to maintain their bone health. The new study, therefore, offers much-needed reassurance by showing no increased dementia risk associated with calcium supplementation.

A Comprehensive Study to Address Concerns

The research conducted by Edith Cowan University and its partners is groundbreaking in its scope and methodology. Drawing on data from the Perth Longitudinal Study of Aging Women (PLSAW), the researchers followed 1,460 women aged 70 and over who were initially free of dementia. Half of the participants received 1,200 mg of calcium carbonate daily for five years, while the other half received a placebo. The trial’s comprehensive follow-up period of 14.5 years, which included tracking through health records, adds robustness to the findings.

This study is among the first to use data from a randomized controlled trial to explore the potential link between calcium supplements and dementia. Such trials are considered the gold standard for establishing causal relationships. The study’s lead author, Negar Ghasemifard, emphasizes that the results provide reassurance about the safety of calcium supplements in the context of dementia risk. The hazard ratio for developing dementia among calcium users was 0.90, indicating no significant difference from those who took the placebo.

It primarily involved older white Australian women, which raises questions about the applicability of the findings to other demographics. Men, younger individuals, and people from different ethnic backgrounds may experience different effects. The study relied on hospital records and death certificates for dementia diagnoses, which may underestimate the total number of cases. Furthermore, the average dietary calcium intake of participants was about 960 mg/day, slightly below the recommended levels. This could potentially limit the applicability of the findings to individuals with much lower calcium intake. Professor Simon Laws, a co-author of the study, notes that future clinical trials should include more diverse populations and focus on brain health as a primary outcome.
